William McCall of Dumfries
William McCall was born in Dumfries in 1853. He was the son of John McCall (a shoemaker) and Helen Reid, it is not known where he served his apprenticeship but by 1871 he was listed as a gunmaker at 23 Castle Street, Dumfries.
He married Grace Lonsdale in 1876 and went on to have seven children, the first four being daughters and it is unusual to see that by 1901, his first daughter, Sarah Ellen McCall was employed as an 'Gunmakers Assistant', to her father.
In about 1890 he re-named the business William McCall & Co. and by 1905 his address was 21 & 23 Castle Street. His guns appear to be sourced from the Birmingham trade, they carry the shapes of Thomas Wild and Rowland Watson. In 1927 the firm was re-named McCall & Sons and appears to have closed by 1940.
Specification
The gun is in fine condition inside and out with partial scroll engraving and 'William McCall & Co Dumfries' engraved in banners on the side of the action. The gun benefits from a long figured semi-pistol grip stock,, which can be altered to length, and the barrels measure very well, the bores are unmarked inside and out.
In order to prepare the gun for sale we have given it a full service, strip and clean, the stock and fore-end wood has been sympathetically cleaned and re-oiled, all the chequering has been cleaned out, the barrels and furniture re-blacked and pins re-coloured.
